What’s not to love about Henri Bendel New York? Truly one of the most prestigious legacy brands in the world with a long line of tastemakers at its helm that have ensured the company’s success across three centuries.
Established in 1895, Henri Bendel was the first retailer to produce and market its own fragrance, offer in-store makeovers and stage its own fashion shows.
Mr. Bendel opened his first store in Greenwich Village where he began branding the brown and white striped boxes that identify the company to this very day. Henri Bendel was the very first retailer to carry Coco Chanel’s designs in the United States demonstring a keen eye for fashion that resonated with American consumers and was a fundamental key to the company’s enduring success.
The reigns were eventually passed on to Geraldine Stutz (president from 1957 – 1986) who’s legendary eye for fashion and discovering up and coming designers lead Henri Bendel to be the first US retailer to carry Ralph Lauren, Perry Ellis, Carlos Falchi, Mary McFadden and many more.
Renown pop artist, Andy Warhol was an in-house graphic designer in the early 1960s and his illustrations marketing the brand are as intriguing today as they were forty years ago.
In recent years Henri Bendel has expanded beyond its flagship store in New York City to become a national chain with 28 stores and growing. Their website, which is fabulous, features Henri-Bendel branded jewelry, handbags, fashion accessories, fragrances, candles, designer collections and so much more!
